Introduction
Lovina Dolphin Tours usually start early in the morning, when the sea is often calmer. Still, some travelers experience seasickness—nausea, dizziness, cold sweat, or fatigue. The good news: seasickness is often preventable. This guide covers the most effective steps, from what to do the night before to the best place to sit on the boat and quick ways to calm nausea once you’re on the water.

Why Seasickness Happens

Seasickness occurs when your brain receives mixed signals from your eyes and inner ear (balance system). Your body feels movement, but your eyes may not “agree,” which can trigger nausea and dizziness.

You’re more likely to feel it if you:

Are on a small boat for the first time
Slept poorly or skipped food completely
Get motion sickness on winding roads
Are traveling with children (some are more sensitive)
Have a cold/flu (your ears become more sensitive)

Before You Go: The Most Important Preparation

1) Get enough sleep
Aim for 7–8 hours. Fatigue increases nausea risk.

2) Don’t go on an empty stomach, but avoid overeating
Eat a light meal 1–2 hours before departure: toast, banana, oatmeal, plain crackers, or a small portion of rice.
Avoid very spicy, oily, or heavy coconut-based meals the night before.

3) Hydrate (small sips are best)
Dehydration worsens dizziness.

4) Avoid alcohol the night before
Alcohol dehydrates you and can trigger nausea faster.

5) Consider optional anti-motion support
This is not medical advice. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, have medical conditions, or take other meds, check with a doctor/pharmacist.

Common options travelers use:

Motion sickness medication (may cause drowsiness)
Ginger candy/ginger tea
Acupressure wristbands (helpful for some people)

Important: If you need to drive or do high-focus activities afterward, choose non-drowsy options or ensure someone else drives.

On the Boat: Fast Ways to Reduce Nausea

1) Sit where the motion is least

Most stable spot: middle of the boat
Avoid the very front (more impact on waves) and the very back (engine smell can bother some people)

2) Look at the horizon
Fix your gaze on the horizon line. Avoid reading or staring at your phone.

3) Get fresh air
Choose a spot with airflow if possible. Fresh air helps many people.

4) Use a steady posture

Face forward
Sit upright, shoulders relaxed
Don’t keep your head down for long

5) Control your breathing
Slow, steady breathing can reduce nausea spikes.

6) Avoid common triggers

Too much phone time
Strong perfume/smoke
Too much coffee (can worsen acid reflux for some)

If Nausea Starts Anyway: What to Do

Keep looking at the horizon and breathe slowly
Sip water (small sips, not big gulps)
Try plain crackers or ginger candy
Loosen tight clothing around your neck/waist
If vomiting happens, many people feel better afterward (it’s common with motion sickness)

Packing Checklist for Seasickness Prevention

Drinking water
Plain crackers / ginger candy
Dry tissues + wet wipes
Small plastic bag (just in case)
Light jacket/hoodie (morning wind can be chilly)
Sunscreen (apply more once the sun is up)
Sunglasses (can reduce dizziness for some)

Extra Tips for Kids & Families

Make sure kids eat a light breakfast
Bring a jacket (getting cold can trigger nausea)
Encourage them to watch the horizon and talk about dolphins (distraction helps)
If someone is highly sensitive, consider a more comfortable/stable boat option (e.g., private, if available)

When You Might Want to Postpone

Consider postponing if you:

Have a high fever or severe flu
Are extremely tired (after a late night)
Have a history of severe seasickness and didn’t prepare
